15 August 1947 — the day India gained its freedom. The occasion is not merely a date to recall, but an act of gratitude for the countless sacrifices that made it possible.

And in our tradition this feeling for the motherland is nothing new — it already echoes through verses thousands of years old.

A special coincidence in 2026

This year 15 August (Saturday) is also Hariyali Teej — Shravana Shukla Tritiya. The pride of the tricolour and the green of Sawan, on one day.

Five patriotic Sanskrit shlokas, with meaning

1. The motherland, greater than heaven

जननी जन्मभूमिश्च स्वर्गादपि गरीयसी।

Subhashita

Meaning: The mother who gave you birth and the land of your birth — both are greater even than heaven.

An honest note on the source

This line is found in some manuscripts of the Valmiki Ramayana — in one form it is attributed to Rama, spoken to Lakshmana after the victory at Lanka. But it is not present in every recension, so scholars usually quote it as a subhashita. It is also the national motto of Nepal.

2. The nation's motto

सत्यमेव जयते नानृतं सत्येन पन्था विततो देवयानः।

Mundaka Upanishad · 3.1.6

Meaning: Truth alone triumphs, not falsehood; through truth the divine path is laid open. This is India's national motto, inscribed below the State Emblem.

3. Vande Mataram

वन्दे मातरम्।
सुजलां सुफलां मलयजशीतलाम्
शस्यश्यामलां मातरम्॥

Vande Mataram · Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay

Meaning: Mother, I bow to thee! Rich in waters and fruit, cooled by the malaya breeze, green with harvests — I salute thee, Mother.

This is India's national song, which appeared in Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel Anandamath.

4. A prayer for the welfare of all

सर्वे भवन्तु सुखिनः सर्वे सन्तु निरामयाः।
सर्वे भद्राणि पश्यन्तु मा कश्चिद्दुःखभाग्भवेत्॥

Shanti Mantra

Meaning: May all be happy, may all be free of illness, may all see what is good, may none come to sorrow.

5. One world, one family

वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्।

Maha Upanishad · 6

Meaning: The whole earth is one family. This was independent India's vision — freedom for ourselves, and respect for everyone.

Independence Day or Republic Day?

This is the most common confusion:

Independence DayRepublic Day
Date15 August 194726 January 1950
What happenedFreedom from British ruleConstitution came into force; India became a republic
Flag ceremonyPrime Minister · Red FortPresident · Kartavya Path

For a speech or a status

The shlokas above work equally well for opening a speech, a school programme, or a WhatsApp status. One suggestion: after reciting a shloka, give its meaning too — only then does it actually reach the listener.

What this day really asks

Winning freedom was an event; keeping it meaningful is a daily duty. One small resolve — to speak the truth, to follow the rules, to help someone — is the truest patriotism.
